About Hip Surgery

Hip surgery is a common procedure that patients of any age may be a candidate for, depending on their specific situation. Though many people equate hip surgery, or hip replacement surgeries, with older patient populations, those in their 20-30s may sometimes need hip surgery as a result of an accident or congenital condition.

At Westchester Sport and Spine, hip surgery is not our first option for treatment unless a serious condition is present. Other options, such as anti-inflammatory drugs, injections, and physical therapy can be helpful to patients with hip discomfort before hip surgery is discussed.

Types of Hip Surgery

There are many options when it comes to helping patients regain comfort and mobility through hip surgery. Your orthopedic specialist at Westchester Sport and Spine will work with you to diagnose your condition, explore non-surgical treatment options, and ultimately decide if surgery is the best option.

Some of the most common types of hip surgery are:

  • Arthroscopic Hip Surgery
In many cases, patients are great candidates for arthroscopic hip surgery. This minimally invasive hip surgery involves using an arthroscope to examine the hip joint and use small tools to perform the necessary procedure. Benefits of arthroscopic hip surgery include decreased recovery time and minimizing pain and scarring.
  • Joint Resurfacing
Patients who are suffering from hip pain that’s caused by advanced arthritis can benefit from hip resurfacing before a total hip replacement becomes an option. Hip joint resurfacing allows patients to regain their normal walking pattern, enjoy a decreased risk of hip dislocation, and give patients longer “wear” on their hip over time.
  • Total Hip Replacement
If a patient is suffering from a degenerative hip disease, having a total hip replacement could be the best option to improve mobility, reduce or eliminate pain, and allow patients go back to doing the activities they love.
  • Partial Hip Replacement
For some patients, a total hip replacement may not be necessary. The orthopedic specialists at Westchester Sport and Spine are dedicated to helping patients retain as much healthy bone as possible. Partial hip replacement surgeries replace the ball of the femur, which can become worn from arthritis or damaged from an injury. Rather than replacing the entire hip joint, the new part of the joint may be cemented to your femur or be porous to allow the bone to grow into the surface of the prosthetic.

Conditions Treated with Hip Surgery

There are numerous conditions that may require hip surgery to be a part of your treatment plan. These including the following:

  • Hip Labrum tear
  • Femoral acetabular impingement
  • Avascular necrosis
  • Congenital hip dislocation
  • Dislocation
  • Fractures
  • Hip bursitis
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Nerve impingement
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Psoriatic arthritis
  • Reactive arthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

Recovering from Hip Surgery

The length of time it takes to recover from hip surgery varies on your age, health condition, and the type of procedure you have. In general, recovery from hip surgery can take anywhere between six weeks and eight months.

Regaining full function of your hip may require a mix of rest, physical and occupational therapy, and anti-inflammatory medications following your procedure.

At Westchester Sport and Spine, we understand that many patients worry about their comfort following hip surgeries and how successful the procedure will be. During your appointments, your orthopedic specialist will discuss the nuances of recovery and what you can expect.
