White Plains Hospital recently welcomed Westchester Orthopaedic Associates to its larger family.  The practice of Louis McIntyre, M.D.; Michael Panio, M.D.; and Eric Zitzmann, M.D. is the third physician group to join the White Plains Hospital Physician Associates, a recently formed division of the hospital aligning local doctors with hospital services.  This new venture enables physicians and White Plains Hospital to share information, promote growth, better utilize resources and expand quality care to its fullest potential.“We are pleased to have Drs. McIntyre, Panio and Zitzmann, who together bring decades of experience and great skill in orthopaedic care, join our Physician Associates group,” said Jon B. Schandler, President and CEO, White Plains Hospital.

Westchester Orthopaedic Associates has long been recognized as a leading orthopaedic practice in Westchester County, successfully treating both routine and complicated problems affecting the bones and joints for over 30 years.  According to surgeon Dr. Louis McIntyre, “The greatest reward for us as physicians is restoring our patients to their normal level of physical functioning, where they can resume participating in the recreational activities they love. Everyday we receive new referrals from people who have heard about us from grateful patients which is a powerful validation of our success.”

Dr. McIntyre has longstanding ties to the greater White Plains community.  A resident of White Plains, he currently serves as the team Doctor for the White Plains School District Athletic Department.  He is a graduate of Pleasantville High School, the College of the Holy Cross and the New York Medical College, where he received his medical degree in 1986.  He completed his residency training in orthopedics at the Long Island Jewish Hospital and his fellowship in arthroscopy and sports medicine in Richmond, Virginia at Orthopaedic Research of Virginia in 1992.

Dr. Michael Panio has been in practice in White Plains since 1976 and is a former chief in the Division of Orthopedic Surgery at White Plains Hospital.  He received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from Cornell University, and completed residencies in surgery and orthopedics, respectively, at the New York Hospital in 1973 and the Hospital for Special Surgery in 1976. Dr. Panio is one of only a few physicians in Westchester County currently licensed by the FDA to perform Oxford Meniscal bearing knee replacement surgery.

Dr. Eric Zitzmann, a founding member of Westchester Orthopedic Associates, obtained both his undergraduate and medical degrees from Cornell, and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Zitzmann has a special interest in adult hip and knee replacement surgery and foot surgery.

The group also offers outpatient physical therapy by skilled PT specialists trained in hands-on techniques and therapeutic exercises designed to restore patients their normal level of physical functioning and prevent recurrence of further injury.  Flexible hours, a convenient and comfortable location and free parking are all provided.

A unique additional feature of the practice is the Westchester Orthopedics Sports Injury Hotline.  The hotline is overseen by Dr. McIntyre and designed to provide an immediate response to student athletes in high school and college who have suffered a sports-related injury.  Parents, athletic trainers and coaches from regional high schools and colleges can use the service to obtain a free consultation with Certified Athletic Trainer Michael Mirabella immediately following an injury and to arrange for any needed testing, physician appointments or physical therapy as soon as possible.
