New Bariatric Surgeon Joins White Plains Hospital Physician Associates

Waheeda Mithani, M.D. joins Surgical Specialists and the White Plains Hospital Family

Bariatric surgeon Waheeda Mithani, M.D. has joined the Surgical Specialists practice in White Plains. The practice is a member of White Plains Hospital Physician Associates, a recently formed division of White Plains Hospital aligning local physicians with Hospital services.

Dr. Mithani joins four other highly respected surgeons in the practice: general surgeon Carl Weber, M.D.; endocrine surgeon Kaare Weber, M.D.; bariatric surgeon Philip Weber, M.D. and colorectal surgeon Kimberly Yee, M.D. The practice has a long history of providing exceptional and individualized surgical care to members of the greater White Plains community under the leadership of Carl Weber, M.D. dating back to the late 1970’s.

Dr. Mithani performs all types of laparoscopic bariatric surgery including gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding, and sleeve gastrectomy, in addition to advanced laparoscopic general surgery. Advantages to laparoscopic surgery include shorter hospital stays and expedited recovery times, as well as minimized discomfort and complications compared to open surgery.

According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, an estimated 177,600 people had bariatric surgery in 2006. About 15 million or 1 in 50, adults in the U.S. have morbid obesity, which is associated with more than 30 other diseases and conditions including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea, hypertension, asthma, cancer, joint problems and infertility. The direct and indirect costs to the health care system associated with obesity are about $117 billion annually.

Dr. Mithani received her undergraduate degree from Trinity University in San Antonio in 2001 and her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio in 2006. She completed her residency in General Surgery at the St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland in 2011, followed by a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at the Hackensack University Medical Center in 2012.
