Hematology & Oncology Group Joins White Plains Hospital Physician Associates
White Plains, NY (July 15, 2013) – The practice of Dan Costin, M.D.; Karen Green, M.D.; Subuhee Hussain, M.D.; Carol Lederman, M.D.; Afshan Malik, M.D. and Julie Monroe, M.D.; has joined White Plains Hospital Physician Associates, the newest division of the hospital which aligns local physicians with Hospital services. The group will be known as Cancer and Blood Specialists of New York and will continue to provide comprehensive medical care to patients with cancer and malignant and non-malignant blood disorders.

The physicians at Cancer and Blood Specialists of New York have a longstanding history of leadership in and around the hospital and pride themselves on providing highly individualized, advanced patient care with an emphasis on cutting-edge treatments and personalized medicine.
The practice, formerly known as the Westchester Institute for the Treatment of Cancer and Blood Disorders, was established in 1999 by Dr. Dan Costin, a recognized oncologist and hematologist who is also the co-Medical Director of the White Plains Hospital Cancer Program. Dr. Costin has been a dedicated leader in the White Plains Hospital professional community for years, serving as Section Chief of Hematology-Oncology and Chair of the Multidisciplinary Tumor Board Conference for 15 years, as well being an active member of the Medical Board, By-laws Committee, and Chair of the Transfusion Committee.
He and his practice colleagues have been enthusiastically involved in cancer research throughout their careers. Dr. Costin has been the principal investigator in numerous research protocols for the treatment of pancreatic, colon, and breast cancers. The most recent trials include an international phase IIB clinical trial for pancreatic cancer and the DEALS-EPS study of exercise and nutrition in cancer patients.

Before joining the group in 2003, Dr. Karen Green spent eight years on the full-time faculty at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Cornell Medical Center, where she served as Assistant Professor of Medicine. She has authored scholarly articles in the fields of hematology and oncology and has served as a co-investigator on several clinical oncology trials. She has expertise in cancers affecting women, including breast cancer and gynecologic malignancies, as well as in a wide range of other cancers and blood disorders. Dr. Green also has been extensively involved in the development of continuing medical education programs for clinical oncologists.
Dr. Subuhee Hussain has broad experience with all types of solid tumors, gynecologic malignancies, hematologic malignancies, benign hematologic conditions, and has been an investigator as part of several clinical trials. She has been a member of the White Plains Hospital medical staff since 2008 and is the current Chair of the Gynecologic Oncology Tumor Board at Dickstein Cancer Treatment Pavilion.
Prior to coming to White Plains Hospital, Dr Carol Lederman worked at the New York Blood Center Transfusion Service at Westchester Medical Center. Since coming to WPH in 1999, she has served as a member of the Tumor Board and Transfusion Committee, which she chaired for five years. She has a particular interest in the treatment of patients with benign blood and coagulation disorders as well as hematologic malignancies.
Dr. Afshan Malik has broad experience with all types of solid tumors, hematologic malignancies and benign hematologic conditions. She has been an investigator in several clinical trials, and has been a member of the White Plains Hospital medical staff since 2012.
Dr. Julie Monroe is the Director of Clinical Research at the White Plains Hospital Dickstein Cancer Treatment Pavilion. She served as the hospital’s Division Chief of Hematology & Oncology from 2006 – 2010 and is an active member of numerous hospital committees including the Tumor Board, Cancer Committee, Transfusion Committee, Internal Review Board, and Ethics Committee. She also serves as Board Member and medical consultant for Gilda’s Club of Westchester. Dr. Monroe treats all types of cancer with a particular focus on the treatment of breast cancer and other women’s malignancies.
