About Carpal Tunnel

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that affects the wrist. It is a condition that causes pain and numbness in the hand. Many people believe that carpal tunnel syndrome develops from typing. In actuality, it is more often caused by genetics and family history.

There are many factors that can contribute to developing carpal tunnel syndrome:

  • Your family history,
  • Repetitive hand movements, and
  • Extreme movement of the wrist can contribute to this condition.

Conditions such as arthritis and diabetes can cause carpal tunnel syndrome to develop. Women who are pregnant are also at risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome.

Getting a Diagnosis

There are various levels of carpal tunnel syndrome. This can range from mild discomfort when conducting daily activities, to debilitating pain. Determining the cause of your pain and severity of condition requires a professional diagnosis.

During diagnosis, your orthopedic surgeon will examine your hand and wrist. They will also ask you questions about your symptoms.

Westchester Sport and Spine may recommend nerve testing to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome. Nerve testing for carpal tunnel syndrome checks the function of the median nerve. This will help them understand if inflammation is impairing the nerve, causing pain.

Treatment Options

There are a variety of treatment options for carpal tunnel syndrome. Your orthopedic surgeon will discuss which one is best for you and create a treatment plan. Surgery is always the last option.

A common treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome are corticosteroid injections. For better accuracy of the injections, your Westchester Sport and Spine doctor will use ultrasound guidance. These injections reduce inflammation of the median nerve. The reduction of inflammation allows the nerve to move as it should and helps with pain relief.

Injections for carpal tunnel syndrome are an outpatient procedure done in the office under ultrasound guidance. This means that you can return home with care instructions the same day as your appointment.

Are You a Candidate for Carpal Tunnel Treatment?

There are many factors to consider when creating a treatment plan.

These include:

  • Your general health,
  • Medications, and
  • Other medical conditions present

Westchester Sport and Spine will review your case and examine your hand and wrist. Your initial treatment plan is then created, focusing on conservative treatment.

If conservative treatments fail, you may become a candidate for surgery. Your Westchester Sport and Spine surgeon will be able to discuss this if it becomes an option.
